The Reason Most People Don't Sleep Well (Anymore)

First let's enlighten you to the prime reason we need sleep...,

Only during deep states of sleep (Delta not REM or Rapid Eye Movement) do body systems shut down adequately to put body into low-energy-requirement state that allows ATP (body's universal energy) to pool in the cells (due to body's energy requirement being low enough) allowing physiological repair, hormone synthesis, immune function and memory consolidation. PERIOD. That's it.

Sleep scientists can study fruit flies' sleep all they feel is necessary (really, they do this!), but the prime reason we sleep is stated above. SIMPLE. Your cell's mitochondria create ATP (the fuel that fires ALL cellular process) 24 hours per day and you're body consumes nearly all of it to maintain consciousness and movement.

Unless you are in the deep state of sleep (called Delta rhythm) for the requisite amount of time (2-4 hours per night), the body never has the required fuel to provide adequate maintenance, hormone synthesis and repair. The result is a body that breaks down quickly and ages prematurely.


Now, why you and many people you know don't sleep well.

In a nutshell, there is an increasingly dense, invisible soup of information carrying radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields, literally being broadcast through our bodies by the

For years, our power frequency 50/60 Hz (Hz = cycles per second) alternating current (AC) electromagnetic field (EMF) pollution had only a slightly detrimental impact, today however the minor threat from electrical wiring has been far overshadowed by information carrying radio frequency (RF) that is having PROFOUND, deleterious impact on sleep quality and sleep duration, as well as body's power generation and communication systems. This RF comes to us via the cellular telephone and wireless computer networks.

Very simply, Around the world EMF/RF pollution has drowned-out natural magnetic fields that humans (and animals) have evolved within, and  have relied upon for eons to live long and healthy lives.

That's it, plain & simple. That and microwaved food, genetically modified food, foods and environment contaminated by pesticides and chemical poisoning. Here however we will deal with the EM/RF component (how you choose to eat is your business) and what you can do about it to achieve better quality sleep and more complete short and long term recovery.

On the one hand we were "designed" so that NATURAL electromagnetic fields such as the Schumann resonance helped to "tune" mind (and body) to maintain physical repair mechanisms and psychological well being; on the other hand,
EMP (electromagnetic pollution) de-tunes and robs body of energy and subsequently healthy homeostasis. See the 2007 Tong chart of mitochondrial effect at 10 Hz (very close to the main Schumann resonance of 7.8 Hz).

Microwaves, power lines, cell phones/towers, and 50/60 Hz (Hz = Hertz = cycles per second) alternating current (AC) are producers of  EMP and you are enveloped in them day and night, 24/7; like it or not (unless you live outside the "grid" and use DC current to power the home).

The body trying to "sense" the beneficial NATURAL Schumann and Earth-based electromagnetic fields for fine-tuning, is analogous to trying to hear a flute solo surrounded by a platoon of air horns (especially while laying at night trying to quiet the mind for sleep and restoration). Without adequate deep sleep the body (even during light sleep) burns too much of the available energy "pool" sustaining the body/brain for there to be adequate energy available for complete cellular repair.

The relationship between the earth's geomagnetic fields and sleep, maintenance and repair mechanisms.

W.O. Schumann a German physicist, discovered in 1952 that there is a resonant cavity between the earth's surface and the ionosphere containing a frequency modulated electromagnetic field in the spectrum from below 1 Hz to more than 100 Hz. Notice in the graph below that the dominant frequencies of these "Schumann Waves" is beSchumann wave .jpglow 14 Hz.

The Russian Space Agency discovered that Schumann- wave generators in space craft (formerly void of  fluctuating magnetic fields) improved the health and well being of astronauts on extended space voyages; especially bone density. N.A.S.A. included them in the design of the Space Station to fend off osteoporosis, muscle wasting and other effects of zero gravity during extended Station missions.

We are describing a very narrow healthy frequency band where frequencies above 15 Hz has been shown in dozens of frequency specific animal studies to cause negative behavioral modification and above 20 Hz stress hormone production. You'll notice that the peak in the graph (highest amplitude) is 7.8 Hz and is what most people mistakenly believe is THE Schumann resonance. In reality Schumann resonance is a SPECTRUM of frequencies with the majority of its amplitude below 15 Hz, and with peaks at 14.1 Hz, 20.3 Hz, and higher.

What is remarkable is that these fields overlay the stress-free human EEG almost perfectly. Notice there are peaks at about 1.5 Hz and 2.5 Hz within the Delta rhythm band as well which used to provide us a fairly strong signal during the nighttime that helped us to achieve Delta rhythm sleep.

Equally important, the mitochondria (cell's power plants) of the body respond particularly well to frequencies falling within this narrow frequency band, particularly at 10 Hz. Research during 5 decades (much of it in former Soviet Union) conclusively showed that a 10 Hz field produced the most exceptional healing and tissue regeneration effects. In 2003 NASA discovered 10 Hz turned the gene sequences (over 300 individual genes) for maturation -OFF- and for developmental -ON-. Further, it found a four fold increase in rate of tissue generation.

Schumann waves encircle the earth horizontal to the ground in a spectrum resembling the graph above, while 9.6 Hz resonates from the Earth's molten core perpendicular to the ground. Recent study into the workings of cells' mitochondria find that 10 Hz stimulation greatly enhances mitochondrial adaptation to both physical and neurological demands. 10 Hz even promotes mitochondrial replication and trafficking within the cell. It is no coincidence that pulsed magnetic fields at or around 10 Hz have produced BY FAR the best healing effects in dozens and dozens of published, peer reviewed studies; particularly those published by the Eastern Europeans circa 1970-1990. It should now be recognized that the phenomenal healing effects of 10 Hz are attributable to the mitochondrial response to that very particular frequency. We use 9.6 Hz square wave as our primary use frequency since 2001 (prior to the mitochondrial specific research becoming available).

It is this Earth's-pulse that is the primary reason you sleep so well on camping trips. It's not the fresh air and exercise; it's sleeping in touch with Mother-Earth and receiving Her vital frequency of 9.6 Hz. Until recently most camping was done outside of the wireless telecommunications "grid". Now even camping, unless you've got weak signal on your phone, you are well within the grid (though lying very close-to or in-contact with the ground, and absent power frequency electric fields).

This is far better than sleeping at home several feet or more above the ground, with 50/60 Hz electric fields, full strength cellular telecommunications grid and in-range wireless networks permeating your bedroom and living spaces with very high frequency signals. Pretty bleak picture overall; and why you can expect your sleep to deteriorate with time, especially if HD TV broadcasting and large scale urban WiFi is rolled out in your area. We are now finding it difficult or impossible to quiet our mind at night and get a good nights sleep. Forget about what it does to your mitochondria for the moment. Bee colony collapse disorder is the canary in the coal mine.

Wireless computer network roll-out coincide well with adolescent sleep deterioration and increase rate of ADHD diagnosis. One can argue the same ratcheting up of cancer to coincide with these technological "advancements" in telecommunications as well. 

Now, more than ever, it's essential you eat well and read the labels on what you put into your  shopping basket. Once GMO foods start permeating the grocery shelves, expect the entire equation to paradigm shift for the worse. There are no safe levels of EMP above 15 Hz. Though many electromagnetic therapy devices use frequencies much higher than this, they are used for short exposure periods and generally have good results from something "other than" improved mitochondrial performance as the research is quite clear that 20 Hz reduces their efficiency.

the neurological system is the most sensitive antenna ever devised, and the mitochondria, well they may be more sensitive than that. Professor Anninos PA discovered he could beneficially affect Epilepsy and Parkinson's patients with fields in the PicoTesla range. All you have to know about PicoTesla is that its about 500 times weaker than Earth's natural magnetic signal. The key here is that Anninos uses a frequency in the 7 Hz - 10 Hz range. Dozens of published studies (see frequency specific animal studies) proved animals exposed chronically to frequencies above 15 Hz result in detrimental behavioral changes and stress hormone production; while frequencies around 10 Hz had beneficial effects. Man-made EMP above 14.1Hz not only impairs the cells' motochondria, it acutely impairs body's ability to reach deep, Delta-rhythm sleep where cellular repair occurs most efficiently. It upsets the natural resonation (think of it as de-tuning an engine) of the mitochondria, debilitating the cellular energy pool.

Under this condition the body lacks energy requirement for repair, regeneration and immunity. So, you are not only sleeping poorly and suffering from lack of sleep, you are also de-tuning the cellular power-plants and your body deteriorates allowing any number of disease states to take over the cells.

Further, only in slow-wave (Delta) sleep can the ATP synthesized by the mitochondria be about 80% devoted to maintenance and repair mechanisms. During lighter stages of sleep, the energy requirement just to sustain the body robs it of this energy pool required for repair and regeneration.

I propose all disease is related to mitochondria dysfunction. Trauma repair is directly related to mitochondrial energy production and over 5 decades in dozens of studies, 10 Hz stimulation provided the very-best results. If this were not enough to convince you, NASA scientists aren't stupid..., they saw the same trend dove into 10 Hz research all the way down to the genetic level.

NASA also determined static magnetic fields and non-square waveforms were found to have little if any effect. In a different study 5 Hz and 15 Hz was found to  increase tissue proliferation only by factor of TWO, while in the same study 10 Hz was shown to increase it by a factor of FOUR replicating the tissue regenerating effects of the NASA study.

The brain's natural EEG rhythms correlate directly with these Schumann resonances and the natural rhythm of the geomagnetic field.

Beta frequencies lie above 12 Hz and when you are in active thought process with no stress you're brain-wave signature is predominated by 12 - 14 Hz low-Beta-rhythm.  Beta frequencies, 12 to 14 Hz, are “normal” predominant rhythm that occur during concentration. Frequencies above lower-mid-Beta occur when agitated or fearful. If you are in fight-or-flight, then you are in the mid to high-Beta-rhythm brain state.

The mid to high Beta-rhythm brain state is required for human survival and has some physiological benefits, but excessive exposure to these higher brain frequencies (at the expense of frequencies at 14 Hz and below) is not healthy, and cumulatively cause stress related health effects including poor sleep and increased production of stress hormones.

If you are stuck in a mid to high-Beta brain state then you cannot sleep and you cannot heal or maintain hormonal homeostasis (cortisol levels soar). To maintain robust health, quality of life, bolster immunity and have a positive outlook on life, then deep sleep and avoidance of  mid-high Beta-rhythm states are mandatory.

Alpha frequencies lie between 8 and 12 Hz and predominate when you are relaxed, calm, and in a meditative state.  Theta frequencies lie between 4 and 8 Hz and predominate during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Theta can predominate when in awakened states under many circumstances. You experience dream-like mental imagery and creativity during Theta-rhythm predominance.

States of deep sleep are called Delta-rhythm and lie below 4 Hz. There are strong relationships between hormonal response, healing, and immunity when Delta-rhythm predominates during deep sleep.  This is also when energy demand for supporting the body is at its lowest. Heartbeat slows, breathing slows, brain activity is minimal; therefore Delta-rhythm sleep is the only time body can concentrate most of its energy production on its physiological and neurological recovery and maintenance activities.

Notice in the graph above that the most dominant Schumann waves lie under 14 Hz which correlate well with Delta, Theta, Alpha and low-Beta brain states -or- deep sleep, calm, relaxed and active thought process respectively. Notice too that amplitude in the Delta-Theta area is greater than the Alpha-Beta. This is not coincidental correlation; it is the way nature keeps us psychologically and physiologically in balance and able to shut our brains down at night while remaining relatively stress free and focused during the day.

Entrainment occurs when our mind-body state locks into the rhythm of an external oscillator (like the EarthPulse™). The external oscillator is either undesirable EMP (causing stress and poor sleep) or the beneficial Schumann and geomagnetic field frequencies (which are simply too weak for the body/brain to "hear" through the EMP.

Normally the brain structure called the thalamus controls our brain waves.
